CAPS banquet
The Comic Arts Professional Society dinner, aka the Sergio Awards Banquet, took place Saturday at Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant in Woodland Hills, CA. Past honorees have included Jack Davis and Stan Lee. This year the group honored Family Circus' Bil Keane with The Sergio. It was a coat & tie affair, so it was a good opportunity to wear our cartoon ties and not look like a dork. I had a tasteful Winnie the Pooh tie.

President Bill Morrison gave opening remarks, and Gary Owens acted as MC. Greg Evans (Luann), Cathy Guisewite (Cathy), Mell Lazarus (Momma & Miss Peach), Jeff Keane (Family Circus), and Glen Keane (Disney animation) were guest speakers. It was more of a roast with Cathy telling why all cartoonists should hate Bil Keane, and Jeff showing a sample of the Family Circus strip with hilarious new captions (Dolly to Billy: "We got you used from the Peanuts newspaper strip, and if you don't behave yourself we'll send you back."). Bil accepted the award and gave a speech of his own, saying, "It's more than an honor to be here. It's a damn inconvenience." He also told us what he's been doing lately: "I'm doing a lot of work for DAM--Mothers Against Dyslexia."

The food was delicious and plentiful. The tiramisu was especially good.

There were door prizes, but anyone who did not win received a Family Circus book.

The First Lady of Voice, the wonderful June Foray

Last year's dinner was at the Porter Ranch Country Club, a wonderful venue. I was, at first, disappointed at the change, but if it remained there the banquet would certainly have been cancelled. It is near one of the fire zones threatening LA. One of my guests had to be evacuated from the Yorba Linda area. His home is safe, but a neighbor three doors down lost his house. I'm safe, but the air quality in the entire basin is terrible. Yesterday's Pasadena Marathon was cancelled. Son Matthew had signed up for the bike ride--as part of his biking merit badge.

Ooh, June Foray.

In a perfect world, she would voice the Spider-Goblin for the animated Usagi show.

Looks like it was a fun time.

I'm so sorry to hear about the fires!

My family has a cabin in the Smokies that was in the path of a forest fire a few months ago. It was moving through but was short enough that we thought we could save the cabin, at least, if we did the whole sand-and-shovel thing, so my dad and I went up and sort of staked out. He built the cabin himself, with help from his brothers and me, so it's of paramount importance to us emotionally; luckily, the fire changed course a half-mile away into an uninhabited area, so we didn't have to try and hold it off after all.

I really feel for you California folks; those big fires are terrifying.

Looks like a good time regardless of the venue!

Always great to see June Foray; you make it a point to get your photo with her, I see. :)

Sorry to hear about the fire situation, though. So far, we down here in San Diego seem to be doing ok (knock on wood!) since most everything else had burned in the past two firestorms we had! I hear the weather is supposed to cool off by mid-week; I'll say a few extra prayers for those in need. I hope you stay safe!

I've known June for about 25 years, and she is one of my very favorite people in animation. It is always a joy to see her.

One of my favorite CAPS banquet was one that honored her and Bill Scott. They did a routine as Rocky and Bullwinkle that was just delightful.

Then truly you've been blessed with a great friendship! In interviews I've seen she always seems like a great lady with a spark in her spirit and a gift for enjoying life.

A June Foray/Bill Scott routine sounds like it'd be great fun! :)
