Tell a Friend
Dave
The CAPS meeting last night was to remember our friend Dave Stevens who passed away earlier this year. It was very well attended by industry pros. A panel consisting of Bill Morrison, Scott Shaw!, Mark Evanier, Russ Heath, Bill Wray, Jim Silke, William Stout, and Paul Power told how they met Dave and stories of their studio mate. Then it was open to the floor for others to say a few words about Dave. Some stories were funny, others were hilarious, and some were very touching. He was a terrific artist, but he was also a great guy.

If you think Dave was a handsome man, Scott revealed he was even better looking as a woman as he found out when Dave was dressed for a Halloween party by two transvestites. Ed Wood himself was at the event. Bill Wray told of how Dave was stalked by Michael Jackson after storyboarding Thriller. Dave enjoyed going to diners, and at one time revealed he wanted to give up art for a no-pressure job as a short order cook. Mark chimed in that it would have taken him three weeks to make a meat loaf, but it would have been the best meat loaf you ever ate.

People brought Dave originals, about two dozen, that covered his history from Russ Manning assistant, to early Hanna Barbera days to The Rocketeer, to Raiders of the Lost Ark storyboards, to an oil painting done in his last few months. There was an auction of three signed prints with the proceeds going to hairy cell leukemia research. The one signed by Dave and Bettie Page went for $1300.

Other pros in attendance included Paul Dini, Sergio Aragones, Bob Chapman, Marv Wolfman, Bob Foster, Carol Lay, Floyd Norman, and Kazu Kibiushi. We all raised a toast to Dave at the end of the night.

There will be a Dave Stevens panel on Sunday morning at Comic-con. Please attend if you're able to.

Thank you for the report! I really wanted to go, but I was unable to.

I would've loved to see the originals. Did anybody take pictures of that night?

There were lots of picture taking. I'll post a couple once I get some. The evening was also video taped by a couple of people.

Before he was Pro

Dave tried to get me into to C.A.P.S. when it was first forming. He said he could nominate me. He took me to his studio On Lankershim and saticoy when first got it. Inked the cover and a page in my Fanzine, making me the first person to publish his art in a comic book styled format. He invited me to helped do sketches at the Childred's Hospital on Sunset when he couldn't find any pro artist's to go.When pacific comics published the Rocketeer without the (TM) on the cover, risking Dave's loss of the name character, I was the one who told him that the name wasn't protected and what he needed to do and who he needed to talk to. I suggested that he make a superhero out of himself and he sent me a letter (which I still have) in which he says "I took your suggestion" and Cliff Secord was the result. Dave went to bat for me numerous times when he was in charge of the Art shows at the San Diego Con. Dave was a very good artist person and friend. I have tons more stories. There was a lot I had wanted to catch up on with him. We had gotten out of touch but he had given me his address about three years ago and I misplaced it. I was going to get in touch again as soon as I found it but then I heard the sad news. Carl Taylor

Remembering Dave

I remember meeting Dave at his house in National City back when he was still in high school. My brother and I and some other friends were putting together a small press comic. After seeing his artwork, I wanted Dave to do a cover for us. His room was covered in drawings of an earlier version of The Rocketeer, it was all gorgeous.

It didn't work out, Dave's output while in high school just wasn't reliable enough when we had a deadline to meet. But I still remember the trip down to see him and how his art just knocked my socks off. We finally had stories by Scott Shaw!, Mike Royer, my brother and others and a cover by John Sullivan.

Sure would have been nice to have had a cover by Dave. He could use color like few other artists and he was excellent at every other part of drawing. Except deadlines, maybe. :)

Remembering Dave with a tear and a smile,
Joyce Melton

Wow.

I can't believe you would leave us hanging with a tidbit about Michael Jackson stalking Dave and then not deliver any details.

My God in heaven, I'm appalled. Nothing is too shameful anymore.

Hank!

We've been missing you at lunch for the past few years. Don't you eat anymore?
